As we highlighted in our previous article, the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) is now reviewed monthly and directly affects your TNB electricity bill based on fuel costs.

With the latest update for June 2026, the AFA has increased further to +2.59 sen/kWh, up from +1.38 sen/kWh in May. For many households, this means another increase in electricity bills despite using the same amount of electricity.

If you’ve been wondering why your bill is climbing, here’s what the latest AFA update means.

AFA has shifted from rebate to surcharge

At the beginning of 2026, electricity consumers were enjoying rebates as fuel costs remained relatively low.

Within just a few months, that situation has reversed.

The trend shows that AFA has moved from giving consumers money back to charging an additional surcharge on every unit of electricity imported from the grid.

Same home. Same usage. RM91 difference.

To better illustrate the impact, let’s compare a typical landed home consuming around 1,200 kWh per month.

In January, the homeowner received approximately RM60 in AFA rebates.

By June, that same household is now paying approximately RM31 in AFA surcharge.

Nothing changed.

Not the home.

Not the family’s electricity usage.

Only the monthly AFA.

That’s a total swing of RM91 over just five months.

Can solar protect you from AFA?

The short answer is:

Yes… but only for the electricity you use directly from your solar panels.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear.

Many homeowners believe that exporting excess solar energy back to the grid avoids AFA charges.

It doesn’t.

Solar you use (Self-consumption)

When your home uses solar electricity the moment it is generated:

You reduce electricity imported from TNB

No AFA is charged on that portion

Every kWh consumed directly from your roof avoids AFA

This is why daytime self-consumption delivers the greatest savings.

Solar you export

When excess solar is exported back to the grid:

You receive energy credits under Solar Atap

However, AFA is still charged whenever you import electricity later

Exported energy credits do not offset AFA

In other words, the best protection against AFA is using your own solar energy in real time.

How can you maximise your solar savings?

The more electricity you consume while your solar panels are producing, the more grid electricity you avoid purchasing.

Simple changes can make a meaningful difference:

Charge your EV during the day

Run your washing machine in daylight hours

Schedule your pool pump during solar production

Operate high-energy appliances while the sun is shining

These habits increase your self-consumption and reduce exposure to future AFA increases.

Solar isn’t about predicting fuel prices

Nobody knows exactly where fuel prices will move next month.

What you can control is how much electricity you need to buy from the grid.

Every unit of electricity generated and consumed directly from your own rooftop is one less unit exposed to rising fuel adjustment charges.

As AFA continues to fluctuate each month, homeowners with well-designed solar systems place themselves in a stronger position to manage long-term electricity costs.

Thinking about going solar?

We help homeowners maximise self-consumption, allowing you to reduce reliance on the grid and minimise exposure to future AFA fluctuations.

“Why is my TNB bill higher this month?”
“I thought solar was supposed to protect me from this?
“What is this AFA thing on my bill?”

These are the questions landing in our inbox this week. This blog will unpack what AFA actually is, who it affects, and the most important — and most misunderstood — bit: what solar energy can and cannot do about it.

Why is my TNB bill higher this month?

The short answer: the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) flipped from a rebate to a surcharge in May — and it’s been shrinking for months.

Month

AFA

Feb 2026

−2.77 sen/kWh

Mar 2026

−2.15 sen/kWh

Apr 2026

−0.47 sen/kWh

May 2026

+1.38 sen/kWh

For a typical landed home using ~1,200 kWh/month, that’s roughly RM50 more compared to February. TNB has signalled the surcharge is likely to persist.

Who does AFA affect?

Only households using more than 600 kWh/month. Smaller households are exempt entirely.

“But I have solar — I’m protected, right?”

Not quite. This is the most common misconception.

Solar you use directly (self-consumption) = no grid import = no AFA.

Solar you export back to the grid = credits that offset your energy charge, but not the AFA.

The only real protection is using your solar in real time.

What can you actually do?

Shift loads to daytime — pool pumps, EV charging, laundry. Run them when your panels are generating.

Size for self-consumption, not maximum export.

Already have solar? Check your dashboard. If you’re exporting more than 50% of your generation, there’s likely easy load-shifting on the table.

The bottom line

AFA is real, it’s rising, and it applies to every grid-imported kWh over the 600 kWh threshold. Solar helps — but only the kWh you actually use yourself.

AFA isn’t going away any time soon. Talk to us about going solar and we’ll show you exactly how much you could save.

With the revised structure, the compensation is lower, meaning:

Exporting energy is less financially attractive

Self-consumption becomes more important than ever

In simple terms, the more solar energy you use directly, the more you save.

So, should you install a battery energy storage system (BESS)?

A battery stores excess solar energy for later use, mostly at night, helping you reduce reliance on TNB’s grid. Instead of exporting at a lower rate, you use your own energy when needed.

When it makes sense?

Having a battery energy storage system is more worth it if you:

Have high night-time usage (e.g. aircond, EV charging)

Generate excess solar during the day

Use more than 1,500 kWh monthly

Important limitation

The battery does not last overnight for most homes.

Typical residential batteries:

Can only support a few hours of usage, not the whole night

May still require grid supply after depletion

It helps reduce bills, but won’t fully replace the grid.

While batteries improve energy independence and efficiency, they come with:

Higher upfront cost

Longer payback period compared to solar panels alone

However, under the new Solar ATAP policy, the value of self-consumption increases, making batteries more relevant than before, especially for the right usage profile.

Solaroo’s take

Under the new policy:

Using your own solar energy is more valuable than exporting it. Battery can improve savings, but only with the right usage pattern.

Our final verdict

Worth it if:

You have high usage and want better energy control

Not necessary if:

Your daytime usage already matches your solar generation

Not sure? Let Solaroo help you find the best setup for your energy needs.
Sarawak homeowners, listen up, the sun isn’t just for tanning anymore. It’s for reducing your monthly electricity bills! With Sarawak Energy’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, you can finally turn your roof into a money-saving powerhouse and with Solaroo, you don’t just install solar, you install confidence.

Pekat Energy Sarawak, powered by Solaroo!

Solaroo is proud to bring our residential solar expertise to Sarawak together with our sister company, Pekat Energy Sarawak (PES). As part of the Pekat Group of companies, PES has been serving Sarawak since 2016, leading impactful off-grid initiatives such as SARES and many more across the state. With PES firmly established on their home ground and Solaroo recognised as the group’s specialist in residential solar, we’re teaming up to deliver safe, smart, and reliable solar solutions tailored for Sarawak homeowners. Together, we’re bringing more sunshine, more savings and more energy independence to Sarawak.

What exactly is NEM?

NEM stands for Net Energy Metering, an initiative by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) that rewards you for producing your own solar electricity. Here’s what it is:

Your solar panels generate electricity during the day.

All the electricity produced is exported directly to the SEB grid through a separate PV meter.

Your home continues to use electricity from the grid as usual via your main SEB meter.

At the end of each month, SEB offsets the electricity you imported from the grid against the electricity your solar system exported, and the net difference is reflected as a bill credit — reducing your monthly SEB bill.

How NEM works in Sarawak

Step 1: You’re eligible if you…

Are connected to the Sarawak Energy grid

Have no outstanding bills of more than 2 months or tampering issues

Install solar PV only (no batteries allowed under NEM)

Step 2: You apply through Solaroo

Solaroo takes care of the paperwork, the design and all the necessary with SEB.

Step 3: Watch the magic happen

When your solar panels produce energy, it flows back to SEB’s grid, earning you energy credits.

Do however take note, savings are capped at up to 75% of your average electricity bill, based on your last three months’ usage, as required by SEB. This means your PV system is sized to reduce most of your bill, not exceed it — with extra savings only possible during periods of lower usage, such as when you’re away on holiday.

Now with a bonus: Up to RM12,000 Subsidy

Starting 2026, Sarawak Energy is offering homeowners a hard-to-miss subsidy under the NEM scheme and we are here to help you claim it.

System size (kWac)

Subsidy amount

2.0 – 3.5 kWac

RM 8,000

>3.5 – 6.0 kWac

RM 10,000

>6.0 – 50 kWac

RM 12,000

Eligibility:

For landed residential customers only

One subsidy per account owner

First-come, first-served, so hurry secure your slot!

With this rebate, your solar payback period gets shorter and your savings skyrocket faster.

Why homeowners are choosing NEM with Solaroo:

Here’s what you get when you go solar the smart way:

Cut your electricity bills: Generate, use, and earn credits.

Built with safety at its core: Our microinverter PV systems come with rapid shutdown technology making your home safer for your family.

High performance, higher efficiency: We use top-tier solar panels from trusted manufacturers, ensuring consistent output, better efficiency and long-lasting performance in Malaysia’s tropical climate.

Boost property value: Solar-ready homes are future-ready.

Enjoy long-term savings: NEM contract runs for 15 years.

Do your part for the planet: Less carbon, more sunshine.

Hassle-free installation with Solaroo: We handle design, approval and performance monitoring so you don’t have to.

A few things to note

Before you dive in, keep these in mind:

NEM doesn’t include battery storage (your credits go to SEB, not a battery).

Unused credits expire after 24 months.

All SEB applications are submitted by SEB-registered contractor like Pekat Energy Sarawak (PES), working closely with Solaroo on your installation.

Your roof’s angle and shading can affect how much you generate, but don’t worry, Solaroo does a full assessment for you before installation.

There is a PV meter deposit connection charges (non refundable) and collateral deposit that you have to pay directly to SEB, which amount ranges from RM1,000 to RM3,500 depends on your house and phase type.

Ready to let the sun pay your bills?

With Sarawak’s endless sunshine, a generous subsidy and our trusted installation, there’s really no reason to keep paying full price for electricity.

You could be exporting power, earning credits and enjoying the glow of free energy from your own rooftop.

So, what are you waiting for, Sarawak? Your roof is ready. Your sun is shining. Reach out to us to make the switch.

Effective 1 January 2026, Solar ATAP (Accelerated Transition Action Programme) becomes Malaysia’s new rooftop solar programme, officially replacing Net Energy Metering (NEM), which ended on 30 June 2025.

If you are wondering:

“Is solar still worth it after NEM?”

“Can I still save money?”

“What’s different under Solar ATAP?”

The short answer is: Yes, solar is still worth it, but ATAP works differently and your PV system sizing matters more than ever.

What is Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP is designed around self-consumption. That means you use solar energy first for your own home or business and only excess energy is exported to the grid for bill credits.

This shift supports grid stability while still helping Malaysians reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions.

Who can apply?

You can join Solar ATAP if you are:

An existing TNB customer (home or business)

A single-owner premise (not multi-tenanted)

Not under an active NEM contract (If you are, the NEM contract must be terminated first)

How much solar can you install?

Homeowners (Domestic)

Single-phase: Up to 5 kWac

Three-phase: Up to 15 kWac

Businesses (Non-Domestic)

Install up to 100% of your Maximum Demand

Maximum PV system size: Up to 1 MW

How does the billing work?

You use solar energy for your own consumption first! Any extra energy is exported to the grid and exported energy becomes bill credits!

Credit rates

For homes: Based on your energy charge rate

For businesses: Based on the average System Marginal Price (SMP)

Important to Know: Credits only offset the current month’s bill:

No carry-forward to the next month

No cash payout

Cannot offset SST, KWTBB, AFA, or other non-energy charges

So, oversizing your PV system can lead to wasted potential, which is why proper sizing is critical under ATAP.

Is there a limit to export?

Yes. To ensure grid stability, exports are capped monthly, as per calculated below:

Monthly Export Limit (MAQ):

PV system size (kWac) × 5 sun-hours × number of billing days

Any energy exported beyond this limit will not be credited.

Contract period

The Solar ATAP contract is up to 10 years. After the contract ends:

You may continue using solar for self-consumption only

Export and bill credits will no longer apply

Remember, your PV system will still produce electricity for 25+ years! Solar ATAP only defines the export benefit period.

Technical requirements, simplified for you

PV system must be installed behind your electricity meter

Certain approvals may be required depending on system size:

CCC (Connection Confirmation Check)

CAS (Connection Assessment Study)

PSS (Power Systems Study)

Any required grid upgrade costs are borne by the applicant

On battery storage systems (BESS):

Not compulsory

It is allowed

Helps store excess solar instead of exporting

Application process

Solaroo manages all technical assessments and approvals for you. The application includes:

Apply via the SEDA eATAP portal

Application fee: RM7.50 per kWac

PV system must be completed within 18 months after approval

e-Certificate issued upon completion

Just submit a few key documents to us and we will do the rest!

How do you maximise savings under Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP rewards smart usage, not oversized systems.

Best practices:

Size your system based on daytime usage, not roof size

Shift usage to daytime (AC, machinery, EV charging, water heaters)

Consider batteries to store excess solar

Avoid installing large systems just to export power

In simple terms — Who is ATAP best for?

Property owners looking for stable, long-term savings

Businesses operating mainly during daylight hours

Those who want clean energy without speculation

Ready for Solar ATAP? Solaroo is here to help

Solar ATAP comes with new rules, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. From:

PV system sizing & cost-benefit analysis

Approvals & application submission

Installation, compliance & monitoring

Solaroo manages the entire solar ATAP journey for you and with you, ensuring your PV system is safe, compliant, and optimised for maximum savings.

Go solar with confidence.
Is your solar PV system not generating data or has your solar DB tripped? Don’t worry, this quick guide will help you safely check the issue and get your system back on track.

Part 1: What to do if your solar DB trips

Firstly, let’s get to know the components of your solar DB below:

Now that you know your solar DB’s key components, follow these steps:

Safety first:

Make sure your hands are dry.

Do not touch any exposed wires.

Check for these DB scenarios:

Scenario 1: If RCCB is DOWN > Push it UP to reset.

Scenario 2: If both RCCB & MCB are DOWN > Push MCB UP first, then RCCB UP.

Observe what happens next:

If it trips immediately after step 2 above – stop resetting further. Send us a photo/video via WhatsApp at 012-5928010 for further assistance.

If both switches stay UP, your solar PV system is working fine. Continue to monitor via the Solaroo app.

No more fixed blocks (like 200-300kWh)

Previously, you were charged based on how much electricity you used within certain blocks. Now, your TNB bill is broken down into different components like:

Energy charge – the electricity you use

Network charge – the cost to deliver electricity to your home

Capacity charge – cost of maintaining sufficient electricity supply capacity

Retail charge – RM10 per month if consumption is more than 600kWh

The types of charges are as per below:

Energy charge – RM0.2703 (<1,500 kWh per month) / RM0.3703 (>1,500 kWh per month)

Capacity charge – RM0.0455

Network charge – RM0.1285

And great news — TNB has removed the ICPT surcharge for users who consume over 1,500kWh a month.

2. Solar NEM offset remains

Just a quick recap, with a solar PV system under Net Energy Metering (NEM), you will first consume the solar generation during the day. Any excess unused solar generation (Lebihan) will be exported back to the grid. This will then be offset against your total usage at the end of each month.

So even with the new tariff in place, any Lebihan will still be used to offset against the energy, capacity and network charges at the end of each month.

3. Introduction of Energy Efficiency Incentive (EEI)

The EEI is aimed to encourage efficient use of electricity by providing rebates for monthly usage of 1,000kWh and below. For example, if you import 420kWh, you will receive a rebate of RM0.145 per kWh!

Source: mytnb.com.my

4.
