Solar ATAP explained: Here’s what Malaysians need to know!
1st January 2026Sarawak homeowners, listen up, the sun isn’t just for tanning anymore. It’s for reducing your monthly electricity bills! With Sarawak Energy’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, you can finally turn your roof into a money-saving powerhouse and with Solaroo, you don’t just install solar, you install confidence.
Pekat Energy Sarawak, powered by Solaroo!
Solaroo is proud to bring our residential solar expertise to Sarawak together with our sister company, Pekat Energy Sarawak (PES). As part of the Pekat Group of companies, PES has been serving Sarawak since 2016, leading impactful off-grid initiatives such as SARES and many more across the state. With PES firmly established on their home ground and Solaroo recognised as the group’s specialist in residential solar, we’re teaming up to deliver safe, smart, and reliable solar solutions tailored for Sarawak homeowners. Together, we’re bringing more sunshine, more savings and more energy independence to Sarawak.
What exactly is NEM?
NEM stands for Net Energy Metering, an initiative by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) that rewards you for producing your own solar electricity. Here’s what it is:
- Your solar panels generate electricity during the day.
- All the electricity produced is exported directly to the SEB grid through a separate PV meter.
- Your home continues to use electricity from the grid as usual via your main SEB meter.
- At the end of each month, SEB offsets the electricity you imported from the grid against the electricity your solar system exported, and the net difference is reflected as a bill credit — reducing your monthly SEB bill.
How NEM works in Sarawak
Step 1: You’re eligible if you…
Are connected to the Sarawak Energy grid
Have no outstanding bills of more than 2 months or tampering issues
Install solar PV only (no batteries allowed under NEM)
Step 2: You apply through Solaroo 🔧
Solaroo takes care of the paperwork, the design and all the necessary with SEB.
Step 3: Watch the magic happen
When your solar panels produce energy, it flows back to SEB’s grid, earning you energy credits.
Do however take note, savings are capped at up to 75% of your average electricity bill, based on your last three months’ usage, as required by SEB. This means your PV system is sized to reduce most of your bill, not exceed it — with extra savings only possible during periods of lower usage, such as when you’re away on holiday.
Now with a bonus: Up to RM12,000 Subsidy
Starting 2026, Sarawak Energy is offering homeowners a hard-to-miss subsidy under the NEM scheme and we are here to help you claim it.
System size (kWac) | Subsidy amount |
2.0 – 3.5 kWac | RM 8,000 |
>3.5 – 6.0 kWac | RM 10,000 |
>6.0 – 50 kWac | RM 12,000 |
Eligibility:
- For landed residential customers only
- One subsidy per account owner
- First-come, first-served, so hurry secure your slot!
With this rebate, your solar payback period gets shorter and your savings skyrocket faster.

A few things to note
Before you dive in, keep these in mind:
- NEM doesn’t include battery storage (your credits go to SEB, not a battery).
- Unused credits expire after 24 months.
- All SEB applications are submitted by SEB-registered contractor like Pekat Energy Sarawak (PES), working closely with Solaroo on your installation.
- Your roof’s angle and shading can affect how much you generate, but don’t worry, Solaroo does a full assessment for you before installation.
- There is a PV meter deposit connection charges (non refundable) and collateral deposit that you have to pay directly to SEB, which amount ranges from RM1,000 to RM3,500 depends on your house and phase type.
